Solana Retroactive Public Good Funding

Retroactive Public Goods Funding (RPGF) is a novel funding mechanism designed to sustainably support projects that have delivered a significant public good to the ecosystem. Unlike traditional grants, RPGF allocates funds retroactively, rewarding projects that have already demonstrated positive impact. The process begins with the clear identification of criteria that define a public good. Funding allocation is then determined through a voting process involving a diverse set of community delegates who ensure that funds are directed towards initiatives that have already delivered real impact to the community.

Process

Projects were nominated by the wider Solana community, and voted on by a suite of delegates handpicked for their activity and contributions to the Solana blockchain. Based on the number of votes each project received, funds are distributed using a quadratic formula.

These ten projects have contributed to the Solana ecosystem in the following ways:

1. OpenBook

OpenBook has facilitated ~$900 million in trading volume and has established deep integration throughout the ecosystem, all while remaining a community-led, public good.

2. Cubik

Open source and helped allocate $150k worth of resources to Solana community projects.

3. SOLFees.fyi

One of the most powerful tools we have to onboard and capture new interest on socials. There is nothing that hits harder than numbers on a screen saying exactly how cheap Solana is in comparison to alternatives. Would love to see it built out to have better comparison tools aka 'this would have cost X on Y'.

Over three months: ~5000 page views ~300 direct tweets via the site

4. Anchor

Open source. Free. Most developers on Solana use it.

5. OpenBook

OpenBook has facilitated ~$900 million in trading volume and has established deep integration throughout the ecosystem, all while remaining a community-led, public good.

6. Codigo

Released public beta exactly a month ago and is packed with features that make Solana development easier.

7. CandyPay

CandyPay is a payments infrastructure platform powering seamless, mobile native crypto payment experiences on Solana. Over 600 businesses, creators, and developers have signed up on our platform, and around 325 have already received payments using CandyPay on mainnet, while being free to use.

8. Sollinked

Sollinked's email gating service has been proven to increase the signal to noise ratio of people like Toly. The email gating service is accessible to anyone with an email and a Solana wallet. Nice widely used application that is free.

9. Open-clockwork

Open-clockwork is a community-driven fork of clockwork, an on-chain automation protocol on Solana. Clockwork has been widely used by the Solana developer community, such as Helium migration, Claynosaurz, Lancer, and idle on-chain games. After Clockwork's development team announced they would no longer maintain the project, open-clockwork is an effort by the SuperteamVN community to help continue maintaining and developing the project

10. Solana playground

Open source and makes Solana development and learning easier and more accessible with an in-browser IDE

Below are all the projects that have received funding, and the percentage of votes (and allocation) they received throughout the process across the four contribution categories!

Contributions to Solana Tech Stack

Contributions enhancing Solana's Tech Stack for improved efficiency, security, and decentralization. Includes work on performance, security standards, and other advancements.

Contributions to Developer Ecosystem

Efforts that support developers in the Solana ecosystem and attract new talent. This includes creating tools like developer SDKs, APIs, oracles, and educational resources to foster dApp development.

Contributions to Governance

Initiatives that impact governance participants within the Solana ecosystem and encourage new governance voters. This includes the development of protocols and standards to enhance governance, reduce friction for eligible voters, and provide educational resources.

Contributions to User Experience and Adoption

Work dedicated to improving Solana's user experience and adoption for both new and existing users. This encompasses user-friendly applications, onboarding tools, and a wealth of educational resources.
